The music supervision team at PlayNetwork saw over 6700+ albums, EPs and compilations added to our extensive music library in 2017. With so much amazing music to pick from, our Music Supervision team finally narrowed down their top 10 albums of the year.
Continuing our theme of top album write ups, we’ve enlisted Associate Music Supervisor, Ruben Lira, who prior to his time here at PlayNetwork worked with record labels and wrote blog post for Tour Worthy. When he’s not procuring, editing or cataloging music here at PlayNetwork, Ruben enjoys playing his guitar and piano while tutoring a music theory lesson here and there. Ruben writes on why the new Hoops album was one of his favorites of 2017.
“Because this album brings the nostalgia and innocence lacking today.”
This album was honestly one of my favorites. I don’t know, something about the shimmering notes and dancy drums, combined with heavy reverb vocals, really spoke to me. With all the negativity going around, the entire album, was a needed contrast to everything going on in the world today. Pleasant to the ear yet playful enough to change your mood. Hoops is a Midwest band who have embraced the retro sound, and vintage synths, and they are okay with that. What this album was to me, was also a soundtrack to a very fond memory for me, and brought a joy and innocents, which is really needed right now.
But honestly, the other reason I fell in love with this album is the cherished memories it brought to me. During an extra gloomy Saturday, I decided to put on this album on the record player. With the weather in a disarray, we wanted a way to pass away the time. Not intentionally, but the album started on the song “On Top,” my daughter then proceeded to dance, hop around in circles and reached her hand to mine and asked for a dance. As a father, I cherish these moments, and for this moment, we danced, jumped and I twirled my lovely daughter throughout the song. With the city skyline as our background through the living room window, we proceeded to dance through the entire album, with every guitar note seemingly guiding every step of the way. With every note played, and passing song, we passed the gloomy day away, and created a soundtrack to our lives, which I will cherish forever.
