This month’s music discovery blog is brought to you by Alex Ruder, not only is he a multi-year Music Supervisor vet, he is also a part-time KEXP DJ, and runner of DIY label Hush Hush Records. Our playlist is all new and has been handpicked by our entire music team to set your playlist in the right direction for the month of June.
LISTEN TO THIS MONTH’S PLAYLIST >
The summer season is approaching, so it’s time to get some tasty tunes ready to go for your BBQ + patio playlist. I’ve combed through a stack of new and upcoming releases and selected a handful of standout choice cuts to sprinkle into your mix. These tracks are sure to add some mouth-watering slow-motion underground funk to compliment the inescapable summertime pop anthems.
Artist: Bluestaeb
Twitter: @Bluestaeb
Track: Left & Right
Splitting time between Berlin and Paris, electronic producer Leon Giseke (aka Bluestaeb) has consistently provided smooth beats since debuting in 2013, and the early singles from his upcoming album Everything Is Always A Process – due out June 15th on the always-reliable Jakarta Records – prove he’s still bringing the heat.
Artist: Children Of Zeus
Twitter: @ChildrenOfZeus
Track: All Night
Children of Zeus is a Manchester, UK duo comprised of emcee Konny Kon and vocalist Tyler Dayley making “some fly lo-fi dusty soul” that’s a perfect balance of 90s-tinged R&B and hip-hop that sounds so right in 2018. Nothing but fire from these two every time they step up to the plate.
Artist: Letherette
Twitter: @letherette
Track: Frsh & Clean
Close UK friends Richard Roberts and Andrew Harber are the talented producers behind Letherette, creators of gauzy sample-heavy beats ripe for outdoor listening. While their full-length studio albums are often unique exploration into experimental territory, their on-going series of low-key EP releases contain juicy slabs of future funk. EP5 is out June 5th on their own label Wulf Records, and this early single is a fitting introduction into their sleek sound.
Artist: Patrick Paige II
Twitter: @PatrickPaigeII
Track: Voodoo
A member of the supremely talented outfit The Internet, Patrick Paige II recently stepped out from behind-the-scenes with his excellent solo debut album of sultry R&B grooves titled Letters of Irrelevance. Early single “Voodoo” is an immediate standout, coming off as a soulful homage to (seemingly) one of Patrick’s main inspirations, D’Angelo, who’s seminal 2000 sophomore album is of the same name.
Artist: Yondo
Twitter: @familyaffairrec
Track: N-Love
Little is known about Yondo aside from his massive YouTube following and the 4 vibrant edits he provided on the inaugural release for new UK label Family Affair Records. Difficult to pick a fave from the release, but this crafty slowed-down flip of Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King’s “I’m In Love” is bound to sound fresh while wearing shades in the sunshine.
